Yummy Goodness From Our Patio - Year Two

Wesley and I love tomatoes. He really enjoys growing his own tomatoes. We have one plant on our patio that has already produced several yummy tomatoes. I think next year we should buy several plants.
Lydia doesn't really like tomatoes and she usually won't eat them (she gets it from her dad and his family) but she will sometimes try the tomatoes from our patio. I guess it is true what they say about kids eating what they grow. Maybe next year I should try to grow some green beans for Wesley.

Bunk Beds!

We ordered the kids bunk beds. Chris put them together on Friday night and bought mattresses on Saturday. That evening we took the kids out to buy bedding. Thankfully, the store was having a great sale.

Lydia had fun playing with the kitchen stuff. We were there for a little while. First we had to pick out what we wanted. Of course, Wesley wanted the shark sheets. But, they were sold out and none of the other local stores had them and they weren't available on the internet. Thankfully, we were able to get the set displayed on one of the beds in the store. As an added bonus, they were considered "a floor model" and were discounted even more.
Wesley and Lydia played with the large doll house while Chris carried everything to the car. Wesley convinced us to buy a tube of knights from the store. They were pretty cheap so we agreed. The kids played with them after our dinner of Thai food.
Here is a picture of the new bed and bedding.
Wesley really likes the shark sheets. For a second set of sheets we bought another "floor model" because that was the only other style he wanted. They have boats and whales on them.
Lydia wanted something pink. Since January she has been sleeping on the toddler bed with blue sheets that have cars on them. I don't think she really thought anything about it but given the chance to pick out something in the store, she wanted pink. She likes these sheets because of the mermaids and dolphins. I love that they picked out ocean themed stuff!
The kids are so excited about the bunk beds. They first slept on bunk beds over a year ago when we got a nice room up-grade at Great Wolf Lodge. Two weeks ago they got to sleep on bunk beds when we visited the Best family. That weekend they were so exhausted at night that they went to sleep without even telling each other good night. Tonight they stayed awake talking for a little while. They haven't really shared a room for six months except when we have traveled. They are pretty excited about being back together.

Pirate's Cove

Today we went to Pirate's Cove. This was our first trip back since last year. It cost us $19 but I think it was worth it. We were there for about four hours!
We went with our neighbors and we all had a great time.
The pirate theme is very cute and the kids really liked the slides.
It took the youngest one in our group (who is only 22 months) a little while to warm up to the water slide and sprayers but he ended up having a great time.
Here he goes again!
Lydia practiced her swimming and loved the slides. She is tall enough now to walk all around the slide area.
Wesley must have done the blue tunnel slide over 100 times. He also had fun on the diving board. (By the way, I don't know the women who were commenting on his jumping in the videos.)

An Eventful Morning

On Tuesday morning I had an appointment with maternal and fetal medicine for another ultrasound. My amniotic fluid has been a little high (it was 24 at weeks 30 and 31 and it is supposed to be less than 25) so my doctors wanted another ultrasound.

On the way to the appointment I was rear-ended right in front of the hospital. I got out and looked at the back of my car and thought it would just take a few minutes to exchange all the information and I would just be a little late for the appointment. I called and let the office know what had happened and said I hoped to be there soon. There was already a police officer stopped behind the other car. She asked if I wanted a paramedic since I am pregnant and I said no because I felt fine.

See, my car doesn't look too bad if you can't see underneath it. That is my spare tire in the road.

Then another officer showed up and asked me the same thing. I just sat in my car with it running since it was already in the 80s at 8:00. Then the fire department showed up to put down some sand like stuff on the fluids that were leaking on the road. I was surprised to learn that my car was also leaking something and that the exhaust system was badly damaged and that I “shouldn’t be running the car and should turn it off.” So I did.

Then a third police officer asked me a couple of questions (the first two had left) and told me that my car would have to be towed. This surprised me. He said the car did what it was supposed to do and crumbled where it should have but that I couldn’t drive it with the exhaust system like that.

I called Chris again and let him know that he would have to come to get me. Right before he got there I called to reschedule my ultrasound and they asked the doctor when she could fit me in. Her response? “Tell her she has to talk with her OB and be admitted to labor and delivery for monitoring to make sure everything is okay and we will fit her in later today.” What?
I have to admit at this point I lost it a little bit. I really didn’t think anything was wrong because I didn’t really feel any impact and the baby was moving around as normal but now I was worried. I was also concerned about work. I had to cancel three kids, one of whom had been on the waitlist for physical therapy for over a month and whose mom was anxious to find out some ways to help her son. So, I had a minor break down as we drove into the parking garage at the hospital.

My OB’s office wasn’t answering their phones yet even though it was a few minutes after 9:00. Since we were right there at the office, I just walked in and told the receptionist what happened. She went and told my OB who walked me to labor and delivery and admitted me and wrote the orders. She was in complete agreement that I needed to be monitored for four hours to make sure the baby and I were okay.

After being hooked up to the monitor, I called and canceled my appointments and by this time I had recovered emotionally and was no longer crying.

I was 35 weeks and 4 days. If I had been 36 ½ weeks or 37 weeks I would have just begged my doctor to do the induction right then and there. It was weird to be in labor and delivery but not have the excitement of getting ready to have a baby.

I was surprised to learn that I was having some contractions. I could not feel them at all. (No one was concerned that I was having some contractions. My doctor told me that maybe things will go really quickly when I am induced.) The baby was doing fine and moving all around as usual. After about an hour, the nurse came back and said they could do the ultrasound now and someone would be there soon to transport me downstairs to maternal and fetal medicine.

I asked if I could change back into my clothes and she said no. I was very embarrassed to be transported through the hospital in a wheelchair in a hospital gown. Of course, I never considered that my patients might feel that way when I did my clinical internship at another local hospital twelve years ago.

We did see a new mom being transported out of labor and delivery and her husband pushing their new baby in the little bassinet. The brand new baby was wrapped up like a little burrito. So cute!!!

Once downstairs I had the ultrasound. The technician said the baby looked perfect but that he probably weighs 7 pounds 1 ounce and that his legs are long. She asked again about gestational diabetes and then asked Chris how tall he is and then asked about the birth weight of our other two kids. The doctor came in a few minutes later and did another ultrasound and confirmed that everything looks great but that he is a big baby. She is happy my doctor is inducing me a little early.

I was wheeled back up stairs for more monitoring. All the blood work came back fine and after a total of four hours at the hospital, I was released. Chris had left about an hour earlier to go pick up our kids at home (it was time for the babysitter to leave). As I waited for them, I saw two new babies going home with their families. It made three weeks seem like a long time.

The next night, the woman who rear ended me called. She apologized for causing the accident and started crying as she said, “you must have been so worried about the baby.” She made me cry with her heartfelt apology and concern. I reassured her that the doctors told me everything was okay with the baby.

Today I saw my OB for a regular scheduled appointment and she is making me go back for another ultrasound on Monday.

An Awesome Fourth of July

Last night we joined good friends for their second annual Fourth of July party. Lydia has talked about the fireworks at Evan's house since last year. She was so excited about the party that she refused to take a nap. She stayed in her room (and played) for two hours while Wesley and I napped but Chris doesn't think Lydia napped.

Chris helped out with the grilling.
Barry and some of the other men worked hard to blow up this large ball.
The kids liked getting in the ball.
Sometimes more than one kid got in the ball for a roll down the hill.
Lydia really enjoyed playing in the sand. Now I want to buy a sand table.
The kids also had a lot of fun in the moonbounce.
When Michele passed out popsicles, all the kids lined themselves up in the grass. Of course, we had to snap a few quick pictures.
Here is a larger group shot. There was a total of 15 kids under the age of 8 at the party, ranging in age from 4 months to 7 years.
I think little kids look so cute in goggles.
Barry had sparklers again for the kids.
Lydia was brave enough to hold one this year.
Thankfully none of the kids got hurt. Lydia played in the sand some more before the fireworks started.
Everyone spread out in the driveway to watch the fireworks that were launched from a local high school. Lydia wasn't afraid of them this year.
Wesley had fun playing with the two other five year old boys and the seven year old boy at the party.
Barry lit some fireworks in the cul-de-sac. Some of the kids really got into them. At one point Wesley told me, "This is awesome!"
Thanks Michele and Barry. We had a wonderful time!

Diving Board Fun

Here is a video of Lydia jumping off the diving board with her backpack on. Wesley also had fun on the diving board but I didn't get a good video of him.

Buried in the Sand

On Saturday we headed back to the beach. Lydia asked Mr. Lang to dig a hole for her so she could "scrape down the sides." She wanted a hole that she could fill in. She did it several times.
This is the only picture I got of Michelle. She was taking a picture of Joseph with her cell phone.
These three loved being buried in the sand.
After being at the beach for over four hours we headed back to the house to shower and then went to Rehoboth for pizza and Funland. Here is a picture of John and Joseph on one of the rides.
The kids had fun on the rides. Our kids stayed awake on the drive back because we fed them gummie worms, alligators, and sharks.
On Sunday we spent most of the day at the pool. Michelle's house is across the street from the pool so she walked home and then came back with lunch - hotdogs, chicken nuggets, and strawberries. Did I mention that she and Lang are great hosts?
Lydia asked to go home around 3:30 or so. When we got to the house, she asked, "Can I take a little rest after my shower?" We had to wake her up for dinner.
Lydia and Joseph liked sitting in these booster seats and pretending to drive. They are so cute together.
Thank you Michelle and Lang. We had a wonderful weekend!
