We Might Regret This But...

Wesley is now very interested in playing Wii games. He especially likes the sword play on Sports Resort.
He was surprisingly good at it.
This is probably something we will later regret. He told Lydia, "Let's pretend you are that girl and I am going to knock you in the water."
Look how happy he is about winning! When it was Lydia's turn to try, he kept telling her, "you need to hit them in the belly."
The next day, he tried bowling. He bowled over a 100 on his first game. We might not let him do the sword play for a while.

Fun with the Grandparents

When we headed to Charlotte on Sunday night a couple of weeks ago, our kids were enjoying playing with their cousin Jacob. So, what makes Grandma and Grandpa's house so much fun? For one thing, playing outside in your PJ's.
Here is Lydia pretending to be one of my friends, Buffy, and talking on the phone. She told my MIL, "I am Buffy." She often tells me the same thing.
The second thing, running around the house ten times. (Gorgeous yard, huh?)
Third, playing in the sprinkler.
Forth, hand-me-down tricycles from their cousins.
Lydia preferred to push it because her legs aren't exactly long enough yet.
Wesley liked the motorcycle.
Fifth, getting your own FULL water bottle.
Six, watching movies.

Seven, and perhaps the biggest reason of all, their cousins.
Eight, dessert every night, cake and/or ice cream.

Nine, toys. The grandparents have a collection of toys and Grandma took the kids out to buy a couple of new ones.

Ten, love and special attention from grandparents who live seven hours away from us. Chris and I weren't worried about the kids that week but we were a little concerned that the kids would wear out the grandparents.
On Saturday, it didn't take Wesley long to tell me he wanted to go home. This really surprised me since he couldn’t wait to get rid of us the week before. When I asked him why he wanted to go home he stated that he wanted to go to the pool. So, it didn’t have anything to do with not wanting to be at his grandparents or wanting to be at home with mom and dad. He just wanted to go swimming. Within 15 minutes of saying that, one of the neighbors came over and invited us to their pool!

This is how Chris worked on Wesley's diving.
Lydia went off a diving board for the first time. You can see that she had her backpack on.
Here are some short videos from the pool. It was a great way to end their week of fun.

Determination

On Tuesday we had a playdate at a friend's pool. My friend told me, "The lifeguards have had to do several rescues this summer so they are now very strict about who goes down the slide. If Wesley wants to do it, he will have to pass the swim test which is one lap (25 meters)." I didn't think he could do it. Wesley quickly started asking about going down the slide. I told him he would have to swim the entire length of the pool. He said, "I can do it. I want to try it."

On his first attempt, he stopped at the two ladders along the way. I tried to explain to him that he had to do the entire length without stopping. I was surprised that he wanted to try again.

On his second try, he stopped at the second ladder (3/4 of the way) to rest. He asked me, "Now, can I go down the slide?" I told him no that he had go from one wall to the next without stopping. He said he could do it but I made him rest first.

On his third attempt he swam the entire 25 meters! I was so proud of him. I was proud of him for swimming 25 meters. I still can't believe that he swam the entire lap without stopping.

I am even more proud of him being so determined. He knew what he wanted and he was willing to keep trying until he got it. My friend's four year olds and six year old also enjoyed going down the slide. The slide shoots the kids out into the deep end ofthe pool. Lydia cried at first about not being able to go down the slide but she quickly got over it. Next year maybe she will be able to pass the swim test.

Tenth Anniversary

Last Friday was our tenth anniversary. It was a sea day on the ship, meaning there was no port of call. The ship traveled from Belize back to Fort Lauderdale. We had breakfast and then worked out. I actually ran two miles on the treadmill. There must be something about the ocean view that inspired me to run. I cleaned off our treadmill one morning but I have yet to use it this week (I did the elliptical machine and a workout video).

We hung out by the pool for a few hours and I read a book while Chris read magazines. We both would rather be doing something that just lounging by the pool so sea days aren't always our favorites. I was really missing the kids and longing to call and check in my MIL. I should have just called.

That night we had dinner at Chops, the specialty restaurant. It is an additional $25 charge per person but we both felt like it was well worth it. The service was great. We had two servers . They seemed to be helping each other and it didn't really seem like one was the lead server. They were both great.

A nice bonus was seeing dolphins (or were they porpoises?) swimming beside the ship. We saw a lot of them but it was hard to catch them on video with our little point and shoot camera.

All the appetizers at Chops looked great. We each tried one, Chris had the soup, and we both had salads. Then we had fabulous steaks! We didn't finish them because we had already indulged in too much bread and yummy roasted red pepper spread. We also shared two side dishes that we barely touched.

Don't I look stuffed? We each ordered dessert and then our servers brought out a third dessert and sang Happy Anniversary to us. It is a small restaurant and most of the other guests joined in the singing. After finishing at Chops we went to the main dining room. Not because we needed anything else to eat but because we wanted to see our tablemates. They were just starting to get there food when we got there. It was fun hanging out and talking with them one last time.

When everyone else's dessert came one of the guys just kept eating lobster.
Our server, her assistant, and the head waiter brought us a dessert and sang Happy Anniversary to us. So, we had a little more dessert.

Here we are with our server. She memorized everyone's name the first night. Hearing her say all the names every time she came to the table helped us remember them also.
All too soon, the cruise was over and we were off the ship, in the cab, and at the airport. We paid a fee to take an earlier flight (great deal for the airline since the earlier flight was only 1/3 full) and headed to SC. Our plane flew over the Enchantment of the Seas and I missed a perfect photo opportunity. Here is a shot looking back at the ship.

The kids acted like they were glad to see us but I don't think they missed us very much. They had a great time.

Snorkeling

In Cozumel we snorkeled. We booked this through the cruise line after debating if we should book with a different tour operator. When we realized that there were 75 people on the same excursion, I had my doubts. They divided everyone into three groups. We were the last group to get on a snorkeling boat (our boat looked like a pirate boat). The man guy organizing everything on the pier was the guide for our boat and he was fantastic. So, it was worth the wait and we enjoyed the three stops for snorkeling.
The reef wasn't very colorful where we were but there were lots of fish. It often seemed like you could just reach out and touch them but I didn't.
I couldn't get the timing down right to get a great picture of Chris.
Here is a picture of our ship, the Enchantment of the Seas.
The snorkeling boat dropped us off at the pier and we took a taxi downtown. We went to Carlos and Charlie's to see a couple of our tablemates who said they would there. We hung out with them while we split a drink and enjoyed chips, salsa, and guacamole (Chris now eats guacamole - yeah!).

After leaving the restaurant, we decided to walk back. I wanted the exercise and Chris was willing to save on the cab fare. So, we enjoyed our three mile walk back to ship.
One last stop for refreshment before getting back on the boat.
That night was the cocktail party for people who were past passengers on Royal Caribbean. They call it the Welcome Back Party. The 42 year old Captain seemed like a very nice guy. He was genuinely interested in how our cruise was going and if we were enjoying the service. We saw him throughout the ship the entire cruise. On the last day, he played in one of the water volleyball games.

Kayaking in the Keys

Chris and I like kayaking and we really should try it closer to home. Until last week, we hadn't kayaked since 2004.

We booked the nature kayak tour in Key West, our first port of call last week. One of the guides picked up this starfish and passed it around. It was dunked in the water before each handoff.
This isn't the best picture but I am holding a sea cucumber. It is the grossest thing I have ever touched.

We would have prefered a kayak trip that involved longer stretches of kayaking. We stopped often to look at the wildlife. When we did get to kayak for a several minutes at a time, I kept hearing Jillian saying, "This is how we get those nice groves across the tops of the shoulders." Ha ha. She says that about shadow boxing with hand weights.
At the end of the tour we went through a mangrove "tunnel". We couldn't really paddle through it so we pulled ourselves through by the branches.
I probably liked this tour more than Chris did. I liked learning about the eco system in the keys (reminded me of those couple of ecology classes that I took) but I was hoping for a harder upper body workout.

You Have to See It to Belize It

On Wednesday last week, the ship docked in Cozumel but I am waiting on my tech support to get the pictures of the camera we used for snorkeling. So, I am skipping to Thursday.

We tendered in Belize, meaning the ship dropped anchor about two miles from shore and we boarded a smaller boat that took us to the pier. The tendering process worked really well in Belize.

Once on the pier we met up with our tour group and boarded a boat for the Jungle, River, Land Rover, & Cave Expedition tour. Now, on my own I wouldn't have really considered this tour but I read some excellent reviews of it on one of my favorite websites.

Our tour started in the water. We boarded a boat that held 40 people (38 passengers, one guide, and one captain).
We were supposed to go straight up the river but the tide was too high for the boat to fit under this bridge.
So, out in the ocean we went. There were four foot waves and you can see how low the sides of the boat were. We got soaked! I had my swim suit under my clothes; I should have just worn it by itself. It was a very thrilling ride! It felt like we were doing full speed through the ocean. Fun, fun, fun!
Once on the river, the boat continued to go pretty fast but since the water was flat the ride was completely smooth and dry. The river was beautiful. Have you ever listened to the rain forest setting on a sound machine? That is what it sounded like every time the captain slowed the boat. The guide also gave us lots of information about Belize. I think if we had been able to go straight to the river, we wouldn't have had to go so fast up the river. But, again, it was fun!

The captain spotted this iguana in the tree and pulled the boat right under the branch so we could all get pictures of it.
We stopped at a beautiful location and departed the boat.
After a break for sodas or water (I had a Coke Light) and bathrooms, we saw the Land Rovers from an earlier trip driving up.
We rode with a family (mom, dad, two teenage sons) from Myrtle Beach. The dad drove first.
This was on the road out to the main road. I think the drivers had a hard time even on the main road. It felt like the back end was getting blown around by the wind and the steering wheel wasn't straight when the wheels were straight. The dad said it was a little challenging to drive it.
Before going back into the jungle, it was time to switch drivers. How long has been since Chris drove a manual transmission?
Okay, I didn't get video of Chris driving. I wish I had but I was just trying to hang on with one hand and snap some photos.
You can see what Chris had just driven through. The Land Rovers were sliding around quite a bit but everyone managed to avoid hitting the trees.
More mud and water.
Again, another fun ride!
When we got of the Land Rovers, there was someone there to spray it off so it would ready for the next group.
We were divided into groups of eight and given another set of guides. We walked across this swinging bridge.
We walked on a short trail (maybe 1/4 mile) to a cave. Can you see the face?
At one point we had to climb through a small opening. I was surprised that there was another guide just to help everyone through the opening. There were a lot of wonderful guides throughout the entire tour.
So, this cave was very different from Luray Caverns and that made it worthwhile.
We had a wonderful Creole lunch - stewed chicken, beans and rice, coleslaw, and plantains. The main laugauge in Belize is English but in school, the children are taught English and Spanish since Belize is boarded by Mexico and Guatamala. They also speak English Creole in Belize which maybe outsiders could understand if they slowed it down (slowed it way down).
They burn nuts (I think they are the Cohune Palm nuts) to repel insects.
After lunch it was time to head back to the port on this open air bus. As we made our way out of the jungle, the guide gave us more information about Belize. Once out on the main road, they blared fun music as the rum punch flowed freely.
We had a wonderful day. I think it was one of the best excursions we have ever done. If you go to Belize, you really should book a tour either through your cruise ship or privately. The people who didn't book tours (including our six tablemates) hated Belize. There is a fenced in area for shopping at the dock but pass the fenced area, it is not completely safe to walk around without a group.

On our tour, we had wonderful, well informed guides who seemed to love their jobs. We got to see a small part of the beautiful country. I would love to go back. Maybe next time we will try cave tubing, or take the kids to the wildlife sanctuary, or go snorkeling on the reef.

As they say in Belize, "You have to see it to Belize it."
