On one of my first trips to South Carolina to visit Chris’ parents they introduced me to chocolate gravy. I am told this recipe was developed during the depression. It makes for a rather sweet breakfast.
On Saturday morning, I made drop biscuits and Dianna made chocolate gravy. Wesley and Lydia loved it, of course! Chocolate for breakfast! Dianna sometimes puts it over ice cream for an after dinner treat.
Mix together the following dry ingredients.
2/3 cup cocoa
¾ cup sugar
½ cup flour
Dash of salt
Add a little cold tap water to make a paste.
Add 1 ½ cup milk (you may need to add another ½ cup later).
Stir with a wooden spoon over low heat. Don’t let it get lumpy on the bottom. Once it starts bubbling then you can add more milk.
Remove from heat.
Add ½ stick of butter
And 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
Serve warm over drop biscuits. Chris’ family breaks up the drop biscuits and then adds the chocolate gravy. The goal is for no white on the biscuits to be showing.
Drop Biscuits
2 cups flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
Mix dry ingredients then add 1 cup of buttermilk (I have also used regular milk, without adding vinegar to it, because I picked up the wrong milk and dumped it in).
Add 4 tablespoons of melted butter
Stir until just blended (don’t over mix). Drop by about ¼ cupfuls onto a lightly greased cookie sheets. I get 12 biscuits out of this recipe.
Bake at 425 degrees for 12 minutes.

Omg, even with a newborn, you're a domestic goddess. I have no idea how you do it. This recipe sounds completely decadent. Yum!
